OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Down in desperation time, Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks called on Kevin Durant to show that he's more than just a three-time scoring champion. And that meant guarding one of the NBA's all-time best.

Durant was up to the challenge, keeping Kobe Bryant from excelling as usual in his closer's role while sparking the Thunder's rally for a 77-75 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals Wednesday night.

Durant scored 22 points and rattled in the go-ahead basket on a baseline runner with 18 seconds left as Oklahoma City scored the final nine points. He also had a crucial steal from Bryant to fuel the rally.

"People talk about how I score the ball," said Durant, one of only seven players to lead the NBA in scoring three straight seasons.

"They don't look at me when we go on the other end. I think this whole playoff run, I've been picking it up on the defensive end."

Oklahoma City trailed by seven with 2 minutes left before surging back with a series of defensive stops by its stars to rally from that deficit in the closing stages of a game for the second time this postseason. The Thunder also were down by seven with 2? minutes left in Game 1 of the first round against defending NBA champion Dallas.

"They won't quit. That's not in their DNA," Brooks said. "They're not wired that way and if they were, they wouldn't be here. We're not going to win every game, but we're going to fight to the last second of the game and we did that tonight.

"If we would have gotten down on ourselves with 2 minutes to go, we would have lost by 12 and we would go to L.A. 1-1."

Instead, Oklahoma City takes a 2-0 lead into Game 3 on Friday night at Staples Center.

Bryant and Andrew Bynum scored 20 points apiece for the Lakers, who came up empty on their last six possessions after Bynum's hook shot made it 75-68 with 2:09 remaining.

Struggling throughout the second half and missing 20 of their first 27 shots, the Thunder came alive after Brooks called a timeout when Bynum's basket gave Los Angeles its largest lead of the game.

James Harden drove for a layup before Durant used his height advantage to reach up and tip away a pass from Bryant. He then ran out for a right-handed dunk at the other end.

Brooks had switched Durant onto Bryant with about 5 minutes left, after Bryant had hit a pair of jumpers as the Lakers started to inch away.

"That wasn't the game plan going in, but there was a moment when I thought Kobe was starting to fill it and I thought Kevin's length would bother him," Brooks said.

That's exactly how it played out ? with the 6-foot-9 Durant using his wingspan to come up with an energizing steal and fast-break chance.

Russell Westbrook then forced another turnover by challenging an outlet pass to Bryant along the sideline. Officials originally ruled that it went off Westbrook, but changed the call after seeing on replay that he didn't touch it and Bryant whiffed on the contested catch.

"What they did the last few minutes there, they just made gambles," Bryant said. "They just jumped in the passing lanes. It's something that we're not accustomed to seeing. It's just flat-out risks defensively."

Harden made the next stop, blocking Bryant's jumper on the Lakers' next possession and getting a layup in transition off it to cut the deficit to one in the final minute.

Bryant then missed on a 3-pointer and the Thunder got the ball back with the chance to take the lead and Durant was able to make it happen on the offensive end.

"I think Kevin has improved on being a two-way player," Brooks said. "I think the last three years it's taken our team to a different level and it takes his game to a different level."

Steve Blake missed an open 3-pointer from the right side with about 5 seconds left after Metta World Peace couldn't get the ball to Bryant on the inbounds play.

Bryant, who was the primary option on the play, said Blake's shot was in the air by the time he turned around to look for an inbounds pass.

"Blake was wide open. We didn't have any timeouts left and he got a clean look, a really good look," World Peace said. "He can knock that down."

Durant was then fouled with 0.3 seconds left and made his first try before missing the second on purpose ? failing to hit the backboard or rim for a violation.

The Lakers got a desperation try, but Harden intercepted World Peace's long pass for Bynum.

Westbrook added 15 points for Oklahoma City, which matched its lowest scoring total of the season but still gutted out the win. The Thunder had ripped apart the Lakers' defense with their pick-and-roll attack in Game 1, scoring 119 points in a 29-point blowout.

Pau Gasol had 14 points and 11 rebounds for L.A.

Historically, the loss makes a huge difference. Los Angeles is 29-12 when splitting the first two games of a seven-game series and has lost 17 of 19 when falling into a 2-0 hole. The Lakers' last comeback was in the 2004 West semifinals against San Antonio.

The Thunder have won all nine of their series after leading 2-0, dating to the franchise's days in Seattle.

"We've got to win," Bynum said. "It's do or die come Friday."

Bryant almost led the Lakers to a big bounce-back victory in this one.

He drilled a jumper from the left wing and Blake followed with a 3-pointer before World Peace hit one of two free throws for a 69-63 advantage with 7:27 remaining. Bryant then answered Serge Ibaka's jumper before missing his final five shots.

He also had a hand in two turnovers in the final 2 minutes, the first created by Durant's defense.

"He used his length on Kobe. Coming up with that steal was huge," Lakers' coach Mike Brown said. "That's what great players are supposed to do. They're supposed to take on the challenge at the end of the game and he did.

"He won the game for them, basically."

Notes: The NBA fined Devin Ebanks $25,000 on Wednesday for actions related to his Game 1 ejection and Bynum $15,000 for failing to speak to reporters Tuesday. Bynum talked at the Lakers' morning shootaround Wednesday and called it a make up for skipping the previous day. ... Harden caught World Peace with an inadvertent elbow to the face in the first quarter. ... After making 10 of 15 shots in Game 1, Westbrook was 5 for 17.

What is Network Marketing? | Honest Reviews Online

The basic description of Network Marketing, in my words would be ?Marketing of goods and services through getting, establishing friendship with the lead and introducing the item as an answer he is seeking, through you and your team, who also duplicate the same process?. This does not stop here. Your team will also have their recruits, duplicating the same process.

Internet Marketing is a cash churning theory for the ones who clinch it, learn it, and implement it. A business module which requires as little as a few dollars as the initial investment. That?s why network marketing is the right business model to open your own home based business. Provided you adhere to the Mlm script.

If Internet Marketing was so easy, why large business houses don?t copy this module? Well they do. Take a look at the branding industry. do you think? Do Starwood, Carlson or Lemon Tree, own all resorts that display their name? No, maybe a handful? Rest all are branded where the company get a percentage of their profit as a fee.

So what does Network Marketing or Web Marketing entail? Primarily it is a three move process, first you connect with people, then you present your proposal or opportunity and there after you push them to extort a decision. All this does sound extremely simple.

But people fall short. The net Network Marketing is not As easy like saying one..two and three. It takes elaborate preparation and implimentation. Careful assessment. Applying course adjustments all the time to avoid or bypass rough weather, road blocks or air pockets.

?Multi Leveled? or multi operative blueprint has the chance for multiple income streams. It requires meeting up with people for financial gains.

in easy terms, Network Marketing requires not only Meeting up or connecting with people but developing a connection. You generate trust by displaying a value gain for your clients and offering your proposal, offer in a carefully navigated manner, as the most appropriate solution to their problems. The opportunity should only be offered after they ask for your advice. They seek you advice as they trust you and like you.

In this process the relationship results into a ?purchase? for the person or transaction for you as a win-win scene.

Remember the complete basis of Multi level marketing system is to lead your customer with a value offer, proposal.

One could very well argue why lose your time and investment in a long process, when product could be sold across the counter. The difference is that in face-to-face sale you are strictly creating a business association and not a relationship which stays for a few minutes during the process. In online Multi level marketing, on the other hand you have established a relationship of trust, liking and most probably of dependence.

What you did and what you are likely to gain against the direct sale approach. You have not just won a client, but also a spokes person, a recruit or an addition to your team. You will now watch him buy other products from you. Not only this, he is going to advertize you and your products to his friends, making your second down line and his first. Can you now see how this functions; you see the benefits of multi level marketing or MLM and online Network marketing. Give it six months to a year and you won?t be able to count the steps in your down line. Now here is a caution, ?so long as you do it right?. How do you do this right?

The major question is how you find people or Traffic. If there is no customers, people, there are no leads development. No prospects, and no opportunity to present your proposal, no client and no team. finished.

There is no quick way to gaining knowledge ? Just learn the MY LEAD SYSTEM PRO from MLSP. I am following the same. Remember The net Marketing is here to stay.

Best of luck in your Network Marketing efforts.

Teehan+Lax's 'Do We Have Milk?' answers the burning question with your Android phone, custom jugs (video)

Image

Let's face it: whether or not there's enough good milk to drink has been an ongoing problem among the technology set, which is why we're surprised that we're only now seeing true smartphone-milk integration through a project at Teehan+Lax's Labs group. As the name implies, Do We Have Milk? will figure out whether or not there's enough in the milk bag (did we mention Teehan+Lax is very Canadian?) based on a weight sensor in the jug. Run low, and your Android phone will tell you not just to buy some more but produce a map pinpointing the nearest convenience or grocery store. DWHM? is an experiment that might take awhile to become a real product, if it ever does, but it could have broad implications for consumables of all kinds in addition to saving you from having to eat your Shreddies dry.

HP Officejet 6100 ePrinter

If the HP Officejet 6100 ePrinter ($99.99 direct) succeeds at nothing else, it significantly redefines the features you should demand in an inexpensive inkjet printer. Suitable for both home and office use, it's a good fit in the dual role of home and home office printer, as a shared printer in a micro office, or as a personal printer in any size office. It's also the hands-down winner as budget priced Editors' Choice for any of these roles.

In addition to fast printing with reasonably good output quality across the board, the Officejet 6100 offers both Ethernet and WiFi, along with USB of course. And as with the more expensive Editors' Choice HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter ($149.99 direct, 4.5 stars), the ePrinter in the name indicates more exotic connection options as well, namely: support for printing from iOS devices over WiFi with Apple AirPrint and for printing through the cloud with the free HP ePrint service. The HP ePrint Web site assigns the printer an email address, which lets you print documents by sending them to the printer as email attachments.

The Officejet 6100 also earns points for its 250-sheet input capacity, instead of the more typical 100 or 150 sheets at this price. Not surprisingly, however, you don't get a duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page) and there's only one paper tray. If you want to print an envelope, say, you'll have to swap out the paper in the tray first.

Basics, Setup, and Speed
At 7.1 by 18.4 by 15.3 inches (HWD), and only 10.6 pounds, the Officejet 6100 is both light enough for one person to move easily, and small enough to share a desk with. Setup is typical for the breed, with an extra, mostly automated, step for registering the printer with ePrint.

For my tests, I connected to a wired network and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista system. On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software) it came in at an effective 3.6 pages per minute (ppm). That counts as a more than respectable speed for the price. The somewhat more expensive Editors' Choice Epson WorkForce 60 ($129.99 direct, 4 stars), for example, was only a little faster, at 4.1 ppm.

The Officejet 6100 also scored well on photo speed, averaging 1 minute 8 seconds for a 4 by 6 photo. That's not much slower than the OfficeJet Pro 8100, at 52 seconds, and almost twice as fast as the WorkForce 60, at 2:12.

Output Quality and Other Issues
Output quality for the Officejet 6100 is at the low end of par for an inkjet overall, but still good enough for most business and personal needs. Text lacks the crispness that you'd get from a laser printer, and I wouldn't even consider using it for, say, a resume. For day to day business use, however, you shouldn't have any complaints unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

Graphics quality is easily good enough for most home use or for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts for example. I saw banding in some full-page graphics, but it was relatively subtle with most color fills, and didn't show at all with some. I also saw a loss of some thin lines, but that's a common issue, and the Officejet 6100 does better on this score than many printers. Colors in photos were a little oversaturated, but roughly a match overall for the low end of what you'd expect from drug store prints.

Ultimately, the Officejet 6100 offers a lot to like. It?s fast for both business applications and photos, it delivers reasonably good quality across the board, and it offers a higher paper capacity than most printers at this price. It also lets you share the printer over a network, print from iOS devices with AirPrint, and print from anywhere and any device by sending documents as email attachments. All this adds up to making the HP Officejet 6100 ePrinter a strong contender as either a personal printer or shared printer at home or in a micro office, and also makes it Editors' Choice.

HTC EVO Design 4G for Boost Mobile hands-on

Image

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you -- that's the very same EVO Design 4G we reviewed late last winter when it bowed on Sprint's lineup. Surfing along the carrier's increasingly antiquated 4G WiMAX network, this handset's getting a new berth on Boost Mobile priced at an affordable $299 for pre-paid customers. Much like its girthier Android cousin the EVO V 4G, the physical construction and internal specifications of this device have remained unchanged. It's still packing a 4-inch 960 x 540 qHD display, single-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon S2, 1.3 megapixel front-facing / rear 5 megapixel cameras and 4GB of internal storage. So, for the price the prepaid carrier's asking, it's not a bad deal.

The phone is still just as pleasant to hold in hand, owing to a soft touch plastic back that's broken up by a smooth piece of aluminum plating. Again, if you've seen its earlier incarnation, you know what you're getting into, but there is a distinct difference here -- a combo of Sense 3.6 and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Luckily for prepaid consumers, the phone's set to launch sometime this June with that software combo pre-loaded; a sweet perk given its place on the lower end of the consumer spectrum. Hit up the gallery below for a further peek at this re-badged handset.

Myriam Joire contributed to this report.

Want To Broadcast Live On YouTube? You?ll Need A Google+ Account For That

google-hangoutThis morning, Google officially rolled out Google+?Hangouts On Air?to all users worldwide, following the feature's limited introduction back in September. At the time of its initial release, this live broadcasting feature allowed top Google+ users (like celebs) stream live video feeds directly to their Google+ fan base. The service kicked off with a Google+ Hangouts stream from will.i.mam, but soon saw a number of notable participants, even including the President of the United States, Barack Obama, at one point. The worldwide rollout of Hangouts On Air, announced today via the official Google Blog, represents an interesting shift for the feature, which before was more about public figures and other types of broadcasters, like news orgs, reaching a large audience of viewers via the social platform. Now, anyone can be a live broadcaster. It's the same promise made by services like Ustream, Livestream, and and Justin.tv, for example. It's now also the promise of Google's own livestreaming property, YouTube.com/live - a property which just opened up to all. Well, all who have a Google+ account, that is.

Who Is 'The Voice'? Tony, Juliet, Jermaine And Chris Duke It Out

Final four also perform with their judges before the winner is chosen Tuesday night.
By John Mitchell

Jermaine Paul performs on "The Voice"
Photo: NBC

The final night of competition proved intense and tough to call Monday night (May 7) on "The Voice" as rocker Juliet Simms, singer/songwriter Tony Lucca, former R&B backup singer Jermaine Paul and classically trained Chris Mann brought everything they had to the stage hoping to land enough votes to take home the title in Tuesday's live grand finale.

But it wasn't all business, as each of the final four also took the stage with their respective coach for a series of powerhouse performances that showcased the onstage chemistry born from both compatibility — looking at you, chill rocker boys Adam Levine and Lucca and vocal dynamos Christina Aguilera and Mann — and unlikely pairings (think country crooner Blake Shelton and Paul and funky soul man Cee Lo and Simms).

First up was Team Blake's Jermaine, who wasn't taking any chances with his song choice, going straight for a mid-'90s jam that has practically become an R&B standard, R. Kelly's inspirational "I Believe I Can Fly."

His simple, clean and emotional performance — Adam called it "elegant" — earned plenty of praise, with Christina admitting, "That song was made for you. You came out classy and positive." Blake couldn't have been more pleased, adding, "My heart is in my throat right now. I've heard that song a million times, but I don't feel like I've ever really heard it before tonight."

As a surprise thank you to their coaches, the final four also hit the stage to sing one of their mentor's biggest hits. Juliet Simms, looking great with newly raven locks and powering through throat issues that Cee Lo revealed at the top of the show, was up first with a rocking take on Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy." She was followed later in the show by Chris Mann singing Christina's emotional ballad "The Voice Within," Paul's clean take on Shelton's country hit "God Gave Me You" and Tony's faithful rendition of Maroon 5's "Harder to Breathe."

When it came time for the first coach/contestant pairing, Christina and Chris found a song that was so clearly recorded specifically for them to sing live on "The Voice" tonight, we wonder if Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion had a crystal ball with them when they hit the studio. That song was "The Prayer," and Xtina hit it on the nose during the rehearsal montage, saying, "We connected so perfectly together, it was effortless."

And they did, of course; the two were meant to perform together.

The next competitive performance came from Team Adam's Tony Lucca, who Adam admitted needed "another moment" (like his rock remix of Britney Spears' " ... Baby One More Time" a few weeks ago) to increase his shot at winning the competition. He found it in a rockabilly reimagining of Jay-Z's "99 Problems," complete with a harmonica and washboard (like you'd use for laundry) for accompaniment.

Unsurprisingly, Christina, who has taken issue with her former "Mickey Mouse Club" co-star often in the past, found fault in Lucca's song choice, saying the B-word that Lucca muted from the song (but which we all know is there) was disrespectful to women. Adam was smartly ready for Christina to slag on Lucca, explaining that the term was more of a metaphor for all the things that drag you down.

Indeed, Christina's criticism of Lucca was so anticipated by Adam that while explaining the song choice, he ripped off his flannel to reveal a sparkling "Team Xtina" T-shirt that forced even the temperamental Aguilera to laugh off the obviously good-natured snarking.

(Also, we'll be needing one of those T-shirts. As a superstar musician, Adam, we have a feeling you know how to find us at MTV HQ in New York City.)

Like Xtina and Chris, Cee Lo and Juliet managed to find a perfect song for their coach/contender performance, Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild." Their take on it, despite an abundance of studded leather and onstage motorcycles, however, fell kind of flat. (Lucky for Juliet, this wasn't the performance that really counted for her.)

We're starting to wonder if Blake is getting jealous of Lucca, because it seems his bromance with coach Adam blossoms more and more each week, coming to a chemistry-filled fruition when the two hit the stage together to sing the Beatles' "Yesterday." Tony plucked the guitar, both crooned and, in all seriousness, the pair delivered a simple, clean take on the classic that left both grinningly pleased when they reached those key final chords.

For his competitive performance, Mann went for his nearest peer in popular music, Josh Groban. It's no surprise that Mann nailed "You Raise Me Up," bringing his coach Christina to tears. Cee Lo called his voice "incomparable," and it's a fact that no one can argue.

For their joint performance, Blake, who throughout the show has always proven a little more willing than the other judges (save maybe music Renaissance man Cee Lo) to step outside his comfort zone, leapt off the deep end and joined Jermaine for a funky, horn-filled "Soul Man" that was anything but country.

It was a joyous and lively performance that makes us wonder if Adam is the one who should be jealous. There was definite onstage chemistry between Blake and Jermaine — and so another "Voice" bromance (we know, they hate that word, but we don't care) is born.

The night ended on a high note: Juliet Simms' blistering tear into Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird." The only woman in the final four, Simms stunned in a Florence Welch-esque gown and cape that Christina Aguilera gave props to. From one diva to another, Xtina also offered Juliet words of encouragement, as she was also under the weather — though you might not know it from her performance.

Juliet tore the song up, and along with an amazing accompanying guitar riff, it was a performance that simply screamed "rock star." She earned a standing ovation from her judge Cee Lo, but it was Adam that perhaps gave the most astute observation, saying, "I have no grit in my voice and you have all of it."

Don't knock yourself down, Adam, but you are right &8212; Juliet's voice is one of a kind.

With a Universal Republic Records contract on the line, we'll learn Tuesday who America has chosen as "The Voice."

Which performance was your favorite of the night? Let us know in the comments below!

In Milan, more residents answer to Hu than Ferrari

A list of the most common names in Milan revealed the extent to which immigration has changed the character of the business-oriented city.?

For decades the family name of ?Brambilla? has been by far the most common in Milan ? to the point that throughout Italy, where family names were originally strongly associated with geography, people still jokingly refer to Milan folks as ?Mister Brambillas? or ?Sciur Brambilla? (?sciur? being the world for ?Sir??in Milanese dialect).?

So when the local council published a list of the most common names in the city last week, many were surprised to find out that Milan has many more residents known as ?Mister Hu? than ?Mister Brambilla.?

Among the ten most common family names in Milan, three were of Chinese origin, pointing out how ethnically diverse this city in northern Italy has become. On the list, ?Rossi," a name common in Italy but not closely associated with the North, comes first, while Hu, of Chinese origin, is a close second. They are followed by five other typically Italian (but not typical specifically of Milan) names. In eighth is another Chinese name, Chen, while uber-Milanese ?Brambilla? comes only ninth, followed by yet another Chinese name, Zhou.

Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

In the last three decades, a growing numbers of migrants, both from the rest of Italy and from abroad, have settled in Milan, mostly drawn by job prospects in the most business-oriented region of the country. Today one in every five Milan residents is either a foreign national or a descendant of migrant workers.

The Chinese community is one of the oldest in the city, dating back to the first wave of the immigration in the early 1900s. While some other nationalities, particularly from?Eastern Europe and North Africa,?are more numerous, Chinese names are predominant because there is less variety among last names.

?To us this whole comes as no surprise,? Luigi Sun, a representative of Milan's Chinese community of Milan, told the daily newspaper?Republica. ?We have known for a long time Hu is one of the most common names in the city. We have more serous stuff to think about.?

The most common names in Milan:?

  1. Rossi (Italy's most common name)
  2. Hu (Chinese)
  3. Colombo (most common in northern Italy, but not necessarily associated with Milan; the famous explorer Cristoforo Colombo, known in English as Christopher Columbus, was from Genoa)
  4. Ferrari (associated both with central and northern Italy)
  5. Bianchi (another very common name throughout the country)
  6. Russo (a variant of Rossi)
  7. Villa (a typical Milan name)
  8. Chen (Chinese)
  9. Brambilla (once thought to be Milan's most common name)
  10. Zhou (Chinese)

From the forums: Galaxy Nexus OEM Desktop Dock

Galaxy Nexus Desktop Dock

Patient British Galaxy Nexus owners have finally reached a once far away moment. OEM accessories for the device are starting to appear at retailers such as Clove Technology. One such patient Nexus owner is nhuth? from the Android Central forums. The precious Desktop Dock has just shown up in the mail, and nhuth ?was good enough to share with us a couple of photos of the item along with a quick first impression.

I preordered the Galaxy Nexus desktop dock and vehicle dock from Clove.co.uk back in February and just received my desktop dock today. All that was in the box was the dock itself and quick-start guide. There are no cables included. The Galaxy Nexus fits in smoothly with a nice, quality feel. The pins work just as I would have hoped. Out back is a micro USB port and 3.5mm audio jack. Unlike the Nexus One dock, no bluetooth is included. So, there is no way to control your music with the phone out of the dock. The connection is solely through the three-pin connection.

Sounds like a bit of a mixed bag. A quality item, but functionality limited a little to what it might have been. Either way, we're glad to see these items are starting to appear in peoples hands. If anyone else has recently taken delivery of the same dock, let us know your own thoughts in the comments below.

?Thanks nhuth!

Third betas of Adobe Flash 11.3, AIR 3.3 give peeks at low-lag audio and deeper iOS support

Adobe Flash Platform

Adobe's famous desktop browser plugin may be looking forward to a 2013 overhaul, but that doesn't mean it isn't out to improve itself in the here and now. Flash Player's 11.3 beta, for instance, rolls in low latency audio support through NetStream, designed specifically to cut back audio lag in cloud gaming. The beta also introduces support for complete keyboard control when in full-screen mode, background Flash updating on Macs, and a Protected Mode for Firefox that keeps rogue Flash files from compromising Windows PCs using Vista or later.

The AIR 3.3 beta, on the other hand, smooths the runtime's iOS experience, allowing compiled apps to run in the background more like their natively-compiled siblings. It's also friendlier to developers, with new USB debugging and simulator support that now doesn't require a physical device. Android 4.0 users aren't entirely left out, getting stylus support for AIR apps on their platform. Adobe hasn't said when the finished versions of Flash 11.3 and AIR 3.3 will reach its servers, but if you're willing to live life on the bleeding edge, you can find the download links below.

Judge: Texas can't cut funds to Planned Parenthood

(AP) ? A federal appeals court ruled Friday that Texas cannot ban Planned Parenthood from receiving state funds, at least until a lower court has a chance to hear formal arguments.

A three-judge panel of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed Friday with a lower court that there's sufficient evidence the state's law preventing Planned Parenthood from participating in the Women's Health Program is unconstitutional. The program provides basic health care and contraception to 130,000 poor women.

District Court Judge Lee Yeakel had issued an injunction keeping Texas from enforcing the law on Tuesday, but Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott appealed to the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans.

On Friday, the court said Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott hadn't shown that Texas would be irreparably harmed by holding off on enforcing the new law until a trial can be held in Austin.

The so-called affiliate rule passed last year by the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature forbids state agencies from providing funds to an organization affiliated with abortion providers, even if all they share is a name. Eight Planned Parenthood clinics that do not provide abortions sued the state. They claimed the law violated their rights to freedom of speech and freedom of association.

"This case isn't about Planned Parenthood; it's about the women who rely on Planned Parenthood for cancer screenings, birth control, and well-woman exams," said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. "We won't let politics interfere with the health care that nearly 3 million people a year rely on Planned Parenthood for in Texas and around the country."

Catherine Frazier, spokeswoman for Gov. Rick Perry, said the state would explore all available legal options.

"Today's developments do not change our concerted effort in coordination with Attorney General Abbott to defend the will of Texans and our state law, which prohibits taxpayer funds from supporting abortion providers and affiliates in the Women's Health Program," Frazier said.

The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said last month that the rule violates federal law. Federal funds paid for 90 percent of the $40 million Women's Health Program until the new rule went into effect, and federal officials are now phasing out support for the program. Perry has promised that Texas will make up for the loss of federal funds to keep the program going without Planned Parenthood's involvement.

State officials have said ending the program would result in more unplanned pregnancies that would cost the state much more than self-financing the program.

However in court papers, Texas Solicitor General Jonathan Mitchell said the state would cut all funds if the federal courts ordered Texas to allow Planned Parenthood to participate in the program.

"State law prohibits Texas from continuing to operate the Texas Women's Program if taxpayer money must be provided to entities that affiliate with abortion-promoting entities," a motion filed by Mitchell said. "Consequently, the district court's preliminary injunction effectively forces Texas to choose between contravening state law and shutting down the program."

Parents important in steering kids away from sedentary activities

ScienceDaily (May 4, 2012) ? Parents can have a significant impact in steering young children away from too much time spent in sedentary pursuits. This new study, in the American Journal of Health Promotion, found this effect in Hispanic families, whose children are more likely to be sedentary than non-Hispanic white children and who are also especially vulnerable to becoming overweight or obese.

"We found that family support is very important for reducing children's sedentary behaviors," said author Zhen Cong, Ph.D., an assistant professor of human development and family studies at Texas Tech University. The sedentary behaviors were mainly TV-watching, computer use and video-game playing, referred to as "screen time."

The researchers followed 418 parent-child pairings for two years. The parents and children, who were from 5 to 9 years old, participated in a program called Transformacion Para Salud (Change for Health), which involved nutrition education, encouragement of exercise and family participation.

Parents were surveyed to determine how much support they provided for active living in their children. Kids with stronger parental support had lower levels of sedentary behaviors.

The research team observed significant gender differences. Girls started out with less sedentary behaviors (as measured by screen time), Cong noted, yet boys were more likely to reduce their sedentary behaviors in response to their parents' encouragement and support.

"Our findings suggest that it is important to test comprehensive, multidimensional, and culturally sensitive interventions suited to the developmental stages of childhood," said Cong. "The bottom line is that it is important to involve families in intervention programs to effectively reduce children's sedentary behaviors."

Lloyd N. Werk, M.D., MPH, chief of the general pediatrics division at Nemours Children's Hospital said, "Sedentary behaviors, such as extended screen time, are significant risk factors for childhood obesity. This study highlights the impact we can have on engaging the whole family to support children in becoming more active and less sedentary."

The study's authors found that gains in promoting healthier lifestyle choices faded after several months. Because of this, both Werk and the authors concluded that work remains to identify ways to secure and build on parental support for active living.
