Michael Dell formally opened Dell?s newest research and development center here today, saying the facility will tap the innovative nexus of Silicon Valley to fill jobs that will create the technology solutions in demand by Dell customers.
Mr. Dell spoke to a gathering of team members and public officials outside the Dell Silicon Valley Research and Development Center, where approximately 700 team members are expected eventually to occupy 240,000 square feet of space in two buildings. Also speaking at the event were California Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. and City of Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews.
? We are making significant and thoughtful investments to develop and acquire industry-leading intellectual property,? Mr. Dell said. ? Silicon Valley is a center of technological innovation and we are looking to recruit from the great talent pool here for high-level jobs in network design, storage development, cloud computing and software development. The new positions we add here are part of more than 1,500 jobs we?re creating in the U.S. this year to help expand our technology solutions portfolio.?
?California is the world capital of innovation and technology, so it?s only natural that Dell has chosen Santa Clara as the home for its newest research and development facility,? said Governor Brown. ?This new facility will create hundreds of cutting-edge technology jobs at a time when we need them most. Dell has made a sound investment by expanding in California, and I look forward to further expansions of Dell?s presence here in the Golden State.?

The Silicon Valley site complements Dell?s Israel Research and Development Center in Ra?anana and development work done at the company?s headquarters in Round Rock, Texas. Dell is also investing in new jobs elsewhere across the U.S., in Atlanta; Minneapolis; Nashua, N.H.; Nashville; Oklahoma City; and Round Rock -- communities well known for their highly educated workforces and stable business environments.
?Our ongoing expansion in the U.S. demonstrates how American companies and communities can grow in a global, knowledge-based economy by prioritizing and investing in a highly educated, skilled workforce, a positive business environment and solid infrastructure,? Mr. Dell said.
In addition to filling new positions, the Silicon Valley facility will allow Dell to consolidate much of its current Northern California operations. It will combine the operations of several area companies Dell has acquired, including Zing, Ocarina, Scalent and Everdream. Two other companies, KACE and Force10, will remain at their current Silicon Valley facilities.
The first phase of occupancy is underway and will continue through next year. The campus will also include customer solutions and briefing centers, a cafeteria and fitness center. Including those housed at the R&D campus, Dell expects to have more than 1,500 employees in Silicon Valley by the end of next year.
Dell announced in April it is investing $1 billion in its current fiscal year to deliver leading solutions, services and cloud-based delivery options to help customers capture the benefits from new compute and information delivery advancements. These investments include solution centers, of which one is planned for the Santa Clara facility, where customers can learn about Dell?s industry-focused solutions and domain expertise. Also, the skills being consolidated and recruited to staff the Silicon Valley Research and Development Center exemplify Dell?s commitment to bring open, capable and affordable solutions to organizations around the world.
