(AP) ? Through music, scripture and song, Don Cornelius was remembered Thursday as the man who elevated black culture and entertainment with his "Soul Train," demolishing barriers of race and culture, and changing American history.

Hundreds of family, friends, entertainers, sports figures and even some former "Soul Train" dancers gathered to honor Cornelius' legacy and recall their recollections of the baritone-voiced host and entrepreneur. The nearly three-hour memorial service featured plenty of laughter and music, including a rousing performance of "Love's In Need of Love" by Stevie Wonder.

Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson delivered a eulogy that centered on how Cornelius' creation created a platform for black music and culture that hadn't been seen on television when "Soul Train" debuted in 1970. "Soul Train" was broadcast nationally from 1971 to 2006 and became one of television's longest running syndicated shows. He gave up hosting duties in 1993.

"Don, we say thanks for being conductor of the 'Soul Train' and laying the tracks," Jackson said. "We thank you because we needed you so badly and you helped us so much."

Several speakers noted that Cornelius didn't just give a platform to performers such as Wonder, Aretha Franklin and the Jackson 5, but he also gave opportunities to black cameramen and demonstrated that television programming aimed at black audiences was viable.

At several points during the service, photos of Cornelius on the show's set were displayed for the gathering, which ended with clips of the popular host dancing and delivering his signature sign-off, "Love, Peace and Soul!!!"

Smokey Robinson joked that Cornelius would often ask guests questions that veered away from their music, such as what they were driving and when they'd last eaten at a particular restaurant.

"I'm really happy to be here because Don was my brother and I am celebrating his life," a smiling Robinson said. "I don't what the rest of you are doing."

Remaining upbeat, Robinson told the crowd, "He started a platform for black people that before that time had not been seen. It had been heard, but it had not been seen."

Pastor Donnie McClurkin, who led the service, noted that his mother didn't allow her children to listen to popular music. But when she went grocery shopping on Saturdays, he and his siblings caught up on all the latest dance moves and music by watching "Soul Train."

Cornelius was born in September 1936 in Chicago, served as a Marine in Korea and worked various jobs before getting into broadcasting in the mid-1960s.

He was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 1995 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but his greatest legacy was the impact of his show, which not only brought black culture, but also black advertisers to nationwide audiences. His show came long before there were any networks devoted to television programming for black audiences, or black actors in prominent roles on network shows ? key cultural barriers that Cornelius helped break down.

Cornelius' granddaughter Christina said that to the world, her grandfather was a visionary and trailblazer.

"He was all those things. But to me he was just grandpa," she said, breaking down. "My smooth voiced, loving grandpa."

Several speakers, including Cornelius' son Tony, spoke of continuing Cornelius' legacy.

Earvin "Magic" Johnson recalled meeting Cornelius in the early 1980s after he started playing with the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Shoot, I come around the corner and I see that big 'fro, I already knew who it was," Johnson said as the crowd laughed, "but I was scared because I always wanted to meet him."

On Thursday, Johnson said he was committed to helping keep the "Soul Train" going.

"Tony, it's our job to keep the legacy going," Johnson said. "The brand that your father has created will last a lifetime."

Several speakers also offered condolences to the family of Whitney Houston, who appeared on Cornelius' show and died unexpectedly Saturday at age 48.

Wonder mused that Cornelius would be pleased to have Houston join him and other musicians in heaven.

"I can only hope we continue to keep this man's life and legacy alive," Wonder said.

Cornelius, 75, died Feb. 1 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and Jackson urged people not to judge him. "We reveal our successes to the world but we conceal our pain," he said.

Rather, Jackson said, the public and those who knew Cornelius well should remember what Cornelius built with "Soul Train" and what it meant to the world.

"It brought joy. It brought pride. It brought talent. It brought hope. It brought opportunity. It blazed trails. It reconciled racism," he said. "Tell them what you know, not what you imagine."

Charles Anthony, Met record-holder, dies at 82 (AP)

NEW YORK ? Charles Anthony, a character singer who set the record for most appearances at the Metropolitan Opera ? 2,928 ? during a career that spanned from 1954 to 2010, died Wednesday. He was 82.

Anthony, a tenor, died at his home in Tampa, Fla., from kidney failure following a long illness, Met spokesman Peter Clark said.

Beginning his career at the old Met on Broadway and moving uptown with the company to its new home at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in 1966, Anthony was a "comprimario," or supporting singer.

He shared the stage with the greatest classical artists of several eras, performing in the Met debuts of Marian Anderson, Birgit Nilsson, Jon Vickers, Leontyne Price, Franco Corelli, Joan Sutherland, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Jose Carreras.

"It's no exaggeration to say that Charlie Anthony is the soul of the Metropolitan Opera," Joseph Volpe, then the Met's general manager, said when Anthony was honored during an intermission in Puccini's "Tosca" in 2004.

Born Calogero Antonio Caruso in New Orleans in 1929, Anthony entered the Met's Auditions of the Air competition in 1952.

Met general manager Rudolf Bing feared that the public would think he was related to the great tenor Enrico Caruso and that the young singer would be burdened with expectations ? so Bing persuaded him to change his name a half-hour before air time.

Milton Cross, the Met's broadcast host, apparently played a role in the decision on what name to take.

"I couldn't think of anything, so we just dropped Caruso, which made grandfather furious," Anthony told The New York Times in 1992.

Anthony made his Met debut as the Simpleton in Mussorsky's "Boris Godunov" on March 6, 1954, with George London in the title role.

"Probably few who saw the performance will forget him," the Times wrote two days later. "Anthony had better be careful. If he does other bit parts so vividly, he'll be stamped as a character singer for life."

Which is exactly what happened.

His most frequent roles were the Innkeeper in Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" (159), Ruiz in Verdi's "Il Trovatore" (141), Gastone in Verdi's "La Traviata" (136) and Spoletta in "Tosca."

On Feb. 17, 1992, singing the role of Borsa the courtier in Verdi's "Rigoletto," Anthony made his 2,396th appearance, breaking the record baritone George Cehanovsky set from 1926-66. Conductor James Levine is now second at 2,442.

Anthony sang his farewell as Emperor Altoum in Puccini's "Turandot" on Jan. 28, 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; son, Anthony Caruso; daughters Anna Beth Burgmeier and Barbara Liriano; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. A private funeral is scheduled for Saturday.

Romney's Santorum problem: no easy targets (Reuters)

PORTLAND, Maine (Reuters) ? U.S. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has a Rick Santorum problem that can't be easily swept aside, even with wins in the sparsely attended Maine caucuses and a poll of conservative activists.

The former Massachusetts governor arguably has fewer effective weapons against Santorum than he was able to pull out against Newt Gingrich after getting a thumping in South Carolina from the former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

As they battled for the 2012 Republican nomination, Romney attacked Gingrich on several fronts, scoring a big hit with ads focused on Gingrich's ethics violations in Congress.

The attacks helped carry Romney to front-runner status in the race to face Democratic President Barack Obama in November - until Santorum roared back into the winner's circle with three victories last week in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri.

But his criticism of the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania has been confined to subjects like his support for spending bills and local spending projects known as earmarks.

It would be difficult for Romney to find a foothold in using social issues against Santorum, a Catholic veteran of the American culture wars who has prayed on the floor of the U.S. Senate and whose campaign events are often dubbed part of a "Faith, Family and Freedom" tour.

Santorum and Gingrich have been vying for the "true conservative" mantle to lure more conservative Republican primary voters who mistrust Romney as too moderate.

By contrast, Romney has essentially staked his White House bid on one selling point: jobs.

Recently, Romney, along with his rivals, has sharpened his rhetoric in the controversy that is pitting Catholic bishops against the Obama administration over birth control.

The former venture capitalist made a mini-comeback on Saturday with a 39 percent victory in Maine's caucuses, beating U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas by a few hundred votes in a poorly attended contest. Romney also won the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll that day.

Santorum brushed off the straw poll victory, accusing Romney on CNN of "buying" his 7-point win. The New York Times reported that the Romney campaign bussed in students from local colleges, an evergreen tactic at straw polls from Iowa to Washington.

Santorum also embraced his third-place finish in Maine. "We ended up with 18 percent, really having not appeared up there or done anything," he said on ABC's "This Week."

"BEATING THE TAR OUT OF HIS OPPONENTS"

Romney has the money to fund a campaign of negative ads against Santorum similar to the hardball policy used against Gingrich in Florida's primary last month.

The Romney campaign and "Restore Our Future," the Super PAC supporting him, spent an estimated $15 million on TV ads in Florida to tear down Gingrich after his South Carolina win.

"He's been able to win in these early primary states by, you know, beating the tar out of his opponents by four- and five-to-one on television," Santorum said on ABC.

The next test will come at the February 28 primary in Michigan where Romney's father was a three-term governor.

Romney's attacks have been centered on Santorum's Senate legislative record, including support for spending earmarks and votes to raise the debt ceiling. That tactic may not be a dealbreaker for some of the conservatives Christians and others now flocking to Santorum's campaign.

A national poll on Saturday by Public Policy Polling showed Santorum at 38 percent to Romney's 23 percent, 17 percent for Gingrich, and 13 percent for Paul.

"Part of the reason for Santorum's surge is his own high level of popularity," the group said. "But the other, and maybe more important, reason is that Republicans are significantly souring on both Romney and Gingrich."

Romney's favorability was barely above water at 44 percent to 43 percent, a 23-point net decline from December, suggesting his response to releasing his tax returns, negative campaigning and other missteps are hurting his image.

The polling institute said Santorum was "completely dominating" the most right-leaning Republicans.

The former senator faced questions on ABC on Sunday about his book "It Takes a Family" where he seemed to suggest women were pressurized by radical feminists to work outside the home.

Years before the current Catholic birth control controversy, Santorum said that contraceptives harm women and society. He has also enraged the gay community, as recently as January, by equating same-sex marriage with polygamy.

Santorum's conservative credentials may land him in trouble in a larger, more diverse electorate, but for the voters who typically turn out for Republican primaries, he seems to be hitting a sweet spot.

Susan Wiswell, 56, of Kittery, a nurse who said social issues should be more prominent in the national discourse, voted for Santorum in the Maine caucus.

"He's a consistent conservative both on fiscal and social issues as well. He's very clean-cut. It would be hard for Obama to smear him. He's just a very solid, modest individual that I could trust," Wiswell said.

How Do You Rig a Straw Poll?

Perhaps the most famous straw poll in American politics is the one held by the Iowa Republican Party in Ames, Iowa, in advance of GOP presidential primaries. That one doubles as a fundraiser for the state party, since anyone who wants to vote must buy a $35 ticket, and the number of tickets is not capped. Campaigns have long recognized that their best chance of winning is to buy up a pile of tickets, give them away to likely backers, and then pay for their transportation to Ames. In 1995, reports that candidates were shuttling people in from other states led organizers to restrict the poll to Iowa residents. Still, spending surged four years later, when Steve Forbes and George W. Bush splashed out $2 million each, chartering luxury buses and hosting musical acts such as Ronnie Milsap and Crystal Gayle. Bush won the poll, and Forbes came in second.
