Rambus Nvidia Ends Legal War, Signs Patent License

The legal war of Nvidia with Rambus finally seems to be finished. On Wednesday, both the companies announced that they have settled prominent patent violation claims as well as have signed patent license agreement. It covered technology owned by Rambus used in several dedicated graphics processors of Nvidia and System-on- a-Chip products for mobile devices and PCs.

Rambus is a technology licensing company that have several patents associated with chip interfaces for RAM, licenses its technology to several leading microprocessor firms like Intel, Sony, Advanced Micro Devices and Toshiba.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed other than its five-year length. However, Rambus did mentioned that the agreement has a resolution of Nvidia?s previous use of patent technology of Rambus in their products.

In 2008 Rambus filed a suit against Nvidia that led Nvidia paying 2.65% bond to continue shipping that were found to have violated Rambus patents with ?certain synchronous dynamic random access memory controllers and products containing the same? that were found reportedly in Nvidia?s GeForce, Quadro, nForce, Tesla as well as Tegra line of products.

In August 2010 Nvidia and Rambus inked a patent license that specified the payment of Nvidia of 1% royalty rate to Rambus for the SDR memory and 2% royalty rate for other kinds of memory controllers . However, that agreement failed to settle the outstanding litigation between the companies.
