If you?re a frequent flier, you probably already use your smartphone to manage itineraries, receive flight alerts and, perhaps, display your boarding pass when heading for the jetway.
On Thursday, Air Canada took mobile to the next level, unveiling an upgraded app that lets passengers search for flights, book their trips and even select their seats from a mobile phone or PDA. Coupled with existing features, including reservation management and mobile payment, Air Canada passengers can now control almost every aspect of travel from the palm of their hand.
Currently available for the iPhone, the new offering represents the latest iteration of an app that debuted in August 2009 and has been growing in popularity ever since. According to Louise Lanoix, manager of customer solutions and innovations, the app has already been downloaded 2 million times and tallies 125,000?-150,000 active users per month.
With the new features, passengers will also be able to compare fares across three consecutive days, bring up information on meals and seat availability and make changes across the carrier?s four tiered fares simply by tapping onscreen links and icons.
The upgraded app works best with the carrier?s mobile+ tool, which lets users store their passenger details (name, birth date, etc.), contact information and preferred payment method before traveling. Once set up, passengers will be able to search, book and buy their air travel with no typing at all.
